Mixed Media with Botanicals

Carmelia has incorporated  her love of art,  flowers and design to create a mixed media art form using Botanicals, Fabric, Pastels and Handmade Paper.

She is continually searching  for new and unusual ways to include interesting and colorful findings such as bark, moss, lichen and seeds in her art.

Some of the botanicals are grown in her yard, others collected from wildings or shipped from across the country.

After the flowers and foliage are gathered, they are gently pressed to preserve their natural beauty. When the botanicals are ready to be used they are not touched by hand, so all of the creative design is done using tweezers. Some pieces have taken up to four weeks to complete.

All of the pictures are done on a fabric background and some include her handmade paper. The botanicals are left in their natural state and are occasionally brushed with pastels to coordinate the colors in a picture. There is no glue or other adhesive used to hold the botanicals in place. They are being held by the pressure of the glass and the background fabric.

Carmelia has exhibited her Botanicals in Florida and in southern New Jersey and in both locations her work has received recognition and awards.
